Assignment 1
Video for Performance :
You have been tasked with creating a video piece that incorporates performance in some capacity. Alternatively, you may look at this as a performance piece that uses video in a manner that supports the performance.
There is no "technology requirement" for this project beyond using video. you should incorporate technology if it supports the content of the piece. You can work in a group, though I expect everyone to participate in some fashion.
There are a few possible ways to approach this.

  1. Come up with a concept and perform it in class using the projector we have in the room (or some other setup that is NOT COMPLICATED).
  2. Execute a performance that is only enabled through the use of video and present documentation of the event (like Acconci's "Centers")
  3. Show an excerpt from a long performance that utilizes video
  4. If your concept will not fit in the classroom (too big, too technically complex, too costly), come prepared to give a presentation of your concept with supporting documents like illustrations, smaller working components, pre-recorded presentation of the performance. Anything that will convey the concept and execution of the performance to the class.
We have looked at a few different kinds of performance that use video, there are many more that we have not touched upon. Whatever you do, be prepared to discuss the work after you have shown it to us, being able to talk about conceptual, aesthetic and if appropriate, technical matters. I expect you all to have feedback for the person showing, and be willing to accept it on your piece.
On Feb 26, you will present your work to the class. Your presentation/performance cannot be any longer that 4 minutes. It should not be shorter than 1 minute. Your setup should be as simple as possible and not take longer than a minute to get up and running. We have a large number of students in the class and we need to make time for presentation and discussion of everyone's work.

Assignment 2
Video for Installation :
You have been tasked with creating a video installation.
There is no "technology requirement" for this project beyond using video. you should incorporate technology if it supports the content of the piece. You can work in a group, though I expect everyone to participate in some fashion.
There are a few possible ways to approach this.

  1. Come up with a concept and demonstrate it in class using the projector we have in the room (or some other setup that is NOT COMPLICATED).
  2. If your concept will not fit in the classroom (too big, too technically complex, too costly, site specific [not involving the 4th floor]), come prepared to give a presentation of your concept with supporting documents like illustrations, smaller working components, pre-recorded presentation of the installation. Anything that will convey the concept and execution of the piece to the class.
We have looked at diffewrent uses of video in installation contexts, there are many more that we have not touched upon. Whatever you do, be prepared to discuss the work after you have shown it to us, being able to talk about conceptual, aesthetic and if appropriate, technical matters. I expect you all to have feedback for the person showing, and be willing to accept it on your piece.
On Monday April 2, you will present your work to the class. Your presentation cannot be any longer than 3 minutes. Your setup should be as simple as possible and not take longer than a minute to get up and running. We have a large number of students in the class and we need to make time for presentation and discussion of everyone's work.
If you plan on using this project as the foundation for your final, that is fine, but be ready to explain how you are going to signifigantly expand on the work you have done so far.
